Syracuse Sunrise was originally painted and installed as a large scale mural in the Onondaga Country Tourism office in downtown Syracuse, NY.
This piece is inspired by Syracuse’s iconic orange color, selected by the founders of Syracuse University, which in 1890 chose orange as its sole school color as a bold, unique emblem not used by other schools — described at the time as symbolic of “the glory of the sunrise and hopes of a golden future.”
To me, the orange sunrise represents the resilience of our community, through snow rain and cloudy skies, we know that a beautiful sun will rise again, reminding us of warmth, creativity, courage, and renewal — like the rising sun over the Onondaga Valley.
